Where to find ingredients
You can find fresh apples at any local market or supermarket.
Granulated sugar, white vinegar, and vegetable oil are common pantry staples available in all grocery stores.
Red food colouring can be found in the baking section of larger supermarkets or specialty baking stores. If you can't find it, you can omit it or use a small amount of beet juice for a natural red hue, though this might slightly alter the flavour.

Preparation method
- Wash the apples thoroughly and dry them completely with a clean cloth
- Insert one or two popsicle sticks firmly into each apple for easy handling when dipping in caramel
- Lightly grease aluminium baking trays or cake tins with oil to prevent the caramel from sticking
- In a saucepan, combine the sugar, water, vinegar, and food colouring
- Stir gently, avoiding the use of a spoon, to prevent the sugar from crystallizing
- Bring to a boil over high heat
- Once boiling, reduce to medium heat and cook for about 25 minutes, without stirring, until it reaches the desired caramel consistency
- To check if it's ready, dip the tip of a popsicle stick into the syrup and drip a bit onto a greased tray
- If it forms a solid, crunchy layer as it cools, it's ready
- Hold the apples by their sticks and dip them into the caramel syrup, pressing gently to coat them completely
- Place the coated apples on the greased tray and allow the caramel to harden before serving
