Where to find ingredients
You can find fresh seafood like cação at local markets or fishmongers. Coconut milk and aromatics are readily available in the pantry and produce sections of local grocery stores. If cação is unavailable, a firm white fish like grouper or halibut makes a suitable substitute.
Preparation method
- Season the fish with lemon juice, garlic, salt, and black pepper.
- Let it marinate in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
- Heat the oil in a large pot or deep skillet and sauté the tomatoes until soft.
- Pour the coconut milk into the pot and let it warm through.
- Add the fish to the pot and simmer for about 15 minutes, until tender and coated in the sauce.
- Adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper to your preference.
- Towards the end of the cooking process, stir in the cilantro, green onions, and the dissolved cornstarch.
- Mix everything gently.
- Allow the sauce to thicken for a few minutes, then remove from heat.
