Ingredients
1 kg wheat flour
500 g vegetable shortening
1 tsp salt
290 ml chilled guaraná soft drink
1 kg ground beef
Salt and seasonings to taste for the beef
1 egg yolk for brushing
500 g vegetable shortening
1 tsp salt
290 ml chilled guaraná soft drink
1 kg ground beef
Salt and seasonings to taste for the beef
1 egg yolk for brushing
Where to find ingredients
Look for the ingredients in the baking aisle, the flour section, the butchery, and the chilled drinks section at supermarkets, as well as at local grocery shops and food markets. If guaraná soft drink is unavailable, use a substitute only if needed, but the ideal ingredient is guaraná soft drink.
Preparation method
- In a large bowl, mix the wheat flour, vegetable shortening and salt
- Add the chilled guaraná soft drink gradually and mix until you have a smooth dough that holds together. Do not knead it too much
- Divide the dough into portions and roll out each portion to assemble the pastéis, shaping discs
- Prepare the filling by mixing the ground beef with salt and your preferred seasonings. Do not cook the beef beforehand
- Place the filling on one half of each dough disc and fold over, forming the pastéis
- Arrange the pastéis on a baking tray
- Brush the surface of each pastel with the egg yolk
- Bake in a preheated oven at high temperature (approximately 200°C)
- Bake until the pastéis are golden and the dough is cooked through. To check doneness, insert a toothpick into one; if it comes out clean and the pastry is fully baked, they are ready
Observations
Baked pastel is a classic of Brazilian cooking, a practical and delicious choice for any occasion. Unlike fried pastel, this oven-baked version gives you a drier pastry that is just as tasty, ideal for serving as a snack or bite-size savoury at family gatherings and celebrations.
