Where to find ingredients
You can find these ingredients at local supermarkets such as Woolworths or Pick n Pay. Look for fresh produce in the fruit and veg aisle and quality meat cuts in the butchery section. If you cannot find a specific culinary sweetener, a small pinch of sugar is a common local substitute, though the original recipe calls for sweetener.
Preparation method
- In a pan, fry the diced steak with the garlic, onion, and bacon until golden brown.
- Add the chopped bell pepper and sauté for another minute.
- Stir in the cooked beans, the chopped cabbage, enough water to lightly cover the ingredients, salt, black pepper, oregano, vinegar, and the sweetener.
- Cook over medium heat until the cabbage becomes tender.
- While the salad is still simmering, crack the egg directly into the pot.
- Stir vigorously with a fork or a whisk until the egg is cooked and the liquid slightly thickens.
- Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary.
- Serve warm.
