Where to find ingredients
You can find semi-sweet chocolate bars and baking essentials like flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt at any local supermarket or grocery store across Guyana. Chopped walnuts are also commonly available in the baking aisle of most supermarkets. For specialty baking ingredients or if you're looking for specific brands, check out larger supermarkets or stores that stock imported goods. If whole walnuts are easier to find, you can chop them yourself using a knife or a food processor.
Preparation method
- Melt the semi-sweet chocolate in a double boiler or microwave, then let it cool slightly
- In a separate bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, salt, and chopped walnuts; set aside
- Cream the softened butter with the vanilla extract until it's smooth and homogenous
- Add the granulated sugar to the butter mixture and continue beating until well combined
- Incorporate the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition
- Gently stir in the melted chocolate until the batter is evenly coloured
- Carefully fold in the dry ingredients from the reserved bowl until just combined. Do not overmix
- Pour the batter into a greased and floured baking pan
- Bake in a preheated oven at a medium temperature until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out with moist crumbs
- Cut the brownies into squares while still warm
- Allow them to cool completely before serving for the best texture
Observations
This recipe yields traditional brownies with a perfect balance of sweetness and intense chocolate flavour. The key to success is creaming the butter and sugar well to ensure a moist and fudgy texture.
