Ingredients
2 tablespoons sugar (for the syrup)
3 stale bread rolls
500 ml milk
3 whole eggs
2 cups sugar
1 dessert spoon lemon zest
3 stale bread rolls
500 ml milk
3 whole eggs
2 cups sugar
1 dessert spoon lemon zest
Where to find ingredients
Find fresh eggs, milk, and granulated sugar at any local supermarket or neighborhood grocery store. For the bread, any standard white rolls or leftover dinner rolls from the bakery section work perfectly.
Preparation method
- Prepare the syrup by melting the 2 tablespoons of sugar directly in a large ring mold.
- Coat the bottom and sides of the mold thoroughly with the caramel.
- Slice the bread rolls into pieces roughly 2 cm thick.
- Arrange the bread slices at the bottom of the prepared caramel-coated mold.
- Blend the milk, eggs, and 2 cups of sugar in a blender until the mixture is completely smooth.
- Stir the lemon zest into the liquid mixture.
- Pour the custard over the bread slices in the mold.
- Place in a preheated oven and bake in a bain-marie for 30 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before carefully unmolding.
Observations
This recipe turns humble pantry staples into a rich, creamy treat. The key to the perfect texture is allowing the bread to fully soak up the custard before sliding the tin into the oven.
