Where to find ingredients
You can find most of these ingredients in any major supermarket like Shoprite, Spar, or Adiba. For the 'muçarela' (mozzarella), any standard block or sliced mild cheese works. Use your preferred brand of white sandwich bread. If you want to elevate the dish, look for authentic imported Parmesan in the deli section or large cheese displays. Dried oregano and olives are available in the spice and canned goods aisles, respectively.
Preparation method
- Grease a baking dish with a little butter
- Line the bottom of the dish with half of the bread slices
- Cover the bread with a layer of ham
- Distribute the tomato slices over the ham
- Scatter the chopped olives over the tomatoes
- Add the sliced mozzarella
- Sprinkle with dried oregano to your liking
- Place the remaining bread slices on top to cover
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and black pepper
- Pour the egg and milk mixture evenly over the bread
- Let the dish soak for about 10 minutes
- Dot the top of the bread with small bits of butter
- Sprinkle the grated parmesan over the top
- Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C until golden brown and bubbly
