Where to find ingredients
You can find condensed milk and butter in the dairy aisle of any local supermarket. For fresh coconut, check the produce section of open-air markets or grocery stores; if fresh is unavailable, you may use high-quality unsweetened desiccated coconut as a substitute. Whole cloves are widely available in the spices section.
Preparation method
- In a heavy-based saucepan, combine the condensed milk, butter, and grated fresh coconut.
- Place the saucepan over low to medium heat.
- Cook, stirring constantly, for approximately 15 minutes until the mixture thickens and pulls away cleanly from the bottom of the pan.
- Remove the mixture from the heat and transfer it to a plate or a shallow serving dish.
- Allow the mixture to cool down until it is lukewarm and safe to handle.
- Lightly grease the palms of your hands with a little butter.
- Scoop small portions of the dough and roll them into smooth, bite-sized balls.
- Gently roll each ball in granulated sugar until evenly coated.
- Press a whole clove into the center of each Beijinho for decoration.
