Ingredients
2 bars semi-sweet chocolate
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 large eggs
1 cup all-purpose flour, sifted
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 large eggs
1 cup all-purpose flour, sifted
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped walnuts
Where to find ingredients
You can find semi-sweet chocolate bars and walnuts at most grocery stores. If you can't find walnuts, pecans make a good substitute. Ensure your butter is softened, not melted, for the creaming stage.
Preparation method
- Melt the chocolate gently in a double boiler or in the microwave. Let it cool slightly
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and chopped walnuts. Set aside
- Cream the softened butter with the vanilla extract until smooth and homogeneous
- Add the granulated sugar to the butter mixture and continue beating until light and fluffy
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, making sure each is fully incorporated before adding the next
- Stir the slightly cooled melted chocolate into the batter
- Gently fold in the reserved dry ingredients until just combined. Do not overmix
- Pour the batter into a greased and floured baking pan (approx. 8x8 inch or 9x9 inch)
- Bake in a preheated oven at a medium temperature (around 175°C or 350°F) until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out with moist crumbs attached
- Cut the brownies into squares while they are still warm
- Allow them to cool completely before serving to achieve the best texture
Observations
This recipe yields traditional brownies with a perfect balance between sweetness and intense chocolate. The secret to success is creaming the butter well with the initial ingredients to ensure a tender crumb.
