Classic Prawn Cocktail (Coquetel de camarão)

Ingredients

500g prawns (cooked and cleaned)
1 head of lettuce
2 tbsp mayonnaise
2 tbsp tomato ketchup
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 small glass brandy
2 tbsp single cream
Salt to taste
Black pepper to taste
Ice cubes as needed

Where to find ingredients

You can find fresh or frozen prawns at local markets or major supermarkets in Banjul and Serekunda. Fresh lettuce and dairy products are widely available in the fresh produce and chilled aisles of local grocery stores. If brandy is unavailable, a splash of lemon juice is a common alternative for the acidity.

Preparation method

  1. Thoroughly wash the lettuce leaves, pat them dry with care, and shred them finely.
  2. Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil.
  3. Drop the prawns into the boiling water and cook for a few minutes until they turn pink. Remove and set aside to cool.
  4. In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brandy, and single cream.
  5. Dice the majority of the cooked prawns into smaller pieces. Keep a few whole prawns aside for garnishing.
  6. Fold the diced prawns gently into the sauce mixture until evenly coated.
  7. Season the sauce to your preference with salt and black pepper.
  8. Place a small layer of ice cubes at the bottom of individual serving glasses.
  9. Layer a portion of the shredded lettuce over the ice.
  10. Spoon a generous amount of the prawn mixture on top of the lettuce.
  11. Garnish each glass with the reserved whole prawns.
  12. Serve the prawn cocktail immediately, ensuring it stays well-chilled.

Observations

The combination of succulent, fresh prawns with a tangy, slightly spiced sauce makes for a refreshing appetiser. Perfect for starting a meal in style or as a crowd-pleasing addition to party spreads, this dish is beloved for its simplicity and bold, balanced flavours.
