Where to find ingredients
Look for lentils, cumin, bay leaf, onion, garlic, and black pepper in the dry goods aisle, spice section, and fresh produce market; olive oil and salt are easy to find in any supermarket. If needed, a neutral cooking oil can be used as a substitute for olive oil.
Preparation method
- Chop the onion and garlic into small pieces
- Heat the olive oil in the pressure cooker over medium heat
- Sauté the onion with a pinch of salt until lightly golden
- Add the chopped garlic
- Add the cumin and bay leaf
- Sauté for about a minute to release the aroma of the spices
- Add the lentils
- Season with black pepper and one teaspoon of salt
- Stir well to coat the grains with the spices
- Pour the water into the pot
- Close the lid and increase the heat
- As soon as the cooker reaches pressure and starts to hiss
- Reduce the heat to the lowest flame
- Cook for 5 minutes
- Turn off the heat
- Wait for the pressure to release naturally before opening the lid
- Serve the lentils while still hot
Observations
Using a pressure cooker is the most efficient way to get perfectly tender lentils in just a few minutes. The hint of cumin lifts the flavour, making this side dish a great nutritious option for everyday meals.
