Where to find ingredients
You can find these ingredients at local supermarkets or open-air markets. For 'requeijão cremoso', which is a unique Brazilian creamy cheese spread, check the specialty dairy or imported foods section. If unavailable, high-quality cream cheese can serve as a substitute. Annatto powder (colorau) is usually found in the spice aisle.
Preparation method
- Thoroughly wash the shrimp and marinate in the lime juice and salt for about 20 minutes.
- Rinse the shrimp again and drain completely.
- In a large heavy-bottomed pan, sauté the crushed garlic in the olive oil until golden.
- Add the chopped onions, annatto powder, and diced tomatoes to the pan.
- Cook until the onions have softened.
- Stir in the tomato sauce, beef seasoning powder, and chopped basil.
- Add the butter and the shrimp to the mixture.
- Simmer over low heat for approximately 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Fold in the requeijão cremoso and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring until the sauce thickens.
- If necessary, dissolve the cornstarch in a small amount of the cooking liquid taken from the pan and stir it back in, cooking for an additional 3 minutes.
