Creamy Peach Layered Dessert (Pavê de pessego)

Ingredients

1 litre whole milk
2 cans sweetened condensed milk
1 whole egg
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 packet champagne-style biscuits (ladyfingers)
1 can peaches in syrup
1 can table cream
3 tablespoons caster sugar

Where to find ingredients

You can find these ingredients at local supermarkets such as Naivas, Carrefour, or Chandarana Foodplus. Look for canned peaches and sweetened condensed milk in the baking aisle. Champagne-style biscuits (ladyfingers) are often found in the imported biscuit section. For the table cream, look for standard canned cream; if unavailable, a thick heavy cream or double cream makes a suitable substitute.

Preparation method

  1. Combine the cornstarch
  2. the milk
  3. the condensed milk and the egg in a heavy-bottomed saucepan
  4. Cook over low heat
  5. Stir constantly until the mixture thickens to a smooth, porridge-like consistency
  6. Line the bottom of a glass serving dish with a single layer of champagne-style biscuits
  7. Pour the hot cream mixture directly over the biscuit layer
  8. Dice the peaches into medium-sized cubes
  9. Distribute the diced peaches evenly over the custard layer
  10. Prepare the topping by whisking the sugar into the table cream in a separate bowl
  11. Spread this cream mixture over the layer of peaches
  12. Cover the dish with aluminium foil
  13. Chill for at least 6 hours in the refrigerator before serving

Observations

This chilled dessert is an ideal centrepiece for family gatherings, perfectly balancing creamy textures with a bright, fruity finish. Follow the method carefully to achieve the right custard consistency and ensure perfectly soaked biscuits for an even result.
