Where to find ingredients
Beef, yoghurt, curry powder, raisins and coconut are found in supermarkets and general food stores. Banana-nanica is the ideal banana; as a substitute, use a small ripe sweet banana.
Preparation method
- In a large pot, heat the margarine and sauté the chopped onion until translucent
- Add the cubed beef and brown it on all sides over medium-high heat
- Sprinkle the wheat flour over the beef and stir well, cooking for 1 minute
- Add the cloves, ground cinnamon and curry, mixing to coat the beef and spices
- Dissolve the beef stock cubes in the boiling water and pour into the pot
- Cover the pot and cook over low heat for about 40 minutes, or until the beef is tender
- Add the chopped tomatoes, cubed apple, chopped banana, grated coconut and raisins
- Mix gently and cook for another 10 minutes, stirring occasionally
- Stir the plain yoghurt into the recipe, mixing well to make a creamy sauce
- Adjust the salt and black pepper, if needed
- Remove from the heat and finish by sprinkling the chopped cheiro-verde on top
- Serve the picadinho hot with plain rice
Observations
This picadinho brings Brazilian home cooking together with curry, cinnamon and cloves. Apple, banana, coconut and raisins give the sauce a gentle sweetness, while yoghurt makes it creamy.
It is a practical dish for varying the weekly menu without complicating the cooking. Serve it hot with plain rice for a full, comforting meal.
