Where to find ingredients
Pick up your basics like flour, milk, eggs, and oil at any local supermarket or grocery store. You will find the fresh produce like tomatoes, peppers, and onions in the fresh aisles. Check the meat or deli section for the hot dogs, and you can grab your yeast in the baking aisle. Ketchup and mustard are easy to find with the other condiments. If you are doing the mashed potatoes, just grab some spuds from the produce section or pick up a pre-made tub if you are short on time.
Preparation method
- Pop the eggs into the blender
- Throw in the chopped parsley
- Pour in the milk
- Add the cooking oil
- Add the salt
- Include the yeast and sugar, then blitz until it is all combined
- Pour the mix into a bowl and stir in the flour bit by bit
- Work the dough until it is nice and smooth, and not sticking to your hands anymore
- Cover it up and let the dough rest for one hour
- Sauté the onion in a pan
- Add the bell pepper and tomatoes into the pan
- Stir in the tomato sauce
- Add the mustard and ketchup to the mix
- Season as you fancy and toss in the hot dog rounds to finish off your filling
- Line a baking dish with half of the prepared dough
- Spread the mashed potatoes over that base layer
- Spread the hot dog filling evenly over the top
- Cover everything with the rest of the dough
- Brush a bit of egg yolk over the top to get a nice golden bake
- Slide it into a preheated oven at a medium heat setting for 40 minutes
Observations
There is something about a proper, pillowy dough paired with a punchy, well-seasoned sausage sauce that just feels like home. This bake is a absolute cracker for a family supper or a no-fuss weeknight treat that everyone can get stuck into.
