Authentic Coconut Fudge Balls (Beijinho)

Ingredients

2 cans of sweetened condensed milk
300g freshly grated coconut
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
Caster sugar for rolling, to taste
Whole cloves, to taste

Where to find ingredients

You can find sweetened condensed milk and shredded coconut in the baking aisle of any local supermarket, such as Woolworths or Coles. For the best result, look for high-quality unsalted butter in the dairy fridge. Freshly grated coconut can be found in the produce section of Asian grocers, or you may use premium desiccated coconut as a substitute.

Preparation method

  1. In a heavy-based saucepan, combine the sweetened condensed milk, butter, and grated coconut.
  2. Place the saucepan over low-to-medium heat.
  3. Cook while stirring constantly for about 15 minutes, or until the mixture thickens and pulls away from the bottom of the pan.
  4. Remove the mixture from the heat and transfer it to a large, flat plate or shallow dish.
  5. Allow the mixture to cool down until it is warm enough to handle.
  6. Lightly grease your palms with a small amount of butter.
  7. Take small portions of the cooled mixture and roll them into small, bite-sized balls.
  8. Roll each ball in the caster sugar until evenly coated.
  9. Garnish the top of each sweet with a whole clove.
