Creamy Coconut Truffles (Beijinho)

Ingredients

2 cans of sweetened condensed milk
finely grated fresh coconut for coating
finely grated fresh coconut as needed
sweetened condensed milk as needed
crystal sugar for coating
2 tablespoons of unsalted butter
100g of finely grated fresh coconut
cloves for decorating

Where to find ingredients

Sweetened condensed milk is found in the baking aisle of any standard supermarket. Fresh finely shredded coconut is ideal for authenticity; look for it in the produce section, or check the frozen foods aisle of international or Latin American grocery stores. If you cannot find fresh, high-quality unsweetened desiccated coconut from a health food shop or the baking aisle is a common alternative. Unsalted butter and granulated sugar are standard staples in every grocery store. Whole cloves are easily found in the spice section of any supermarket.

Preparation method

  1. In a heavy-bottomed pan, stir together the sweetened condensed milk, unsalted butter, and shredded coconut
  2. Place the pan over low-to-medium heat
  3. Cook the mixture, stirring constantly, for about 15 minutes until it thickens and pulls away cleanly from the bottom of the pan
  4. Remove the pan from the heat and transfer the mixture to a plate or shallow dish
  5. Let it sit until it reaches room temperature and is cool enough to handle
  6. Lightly grease your palms with a little bit of butter to prevent sticking
  7. Take small portions of the cooled mixture and roll them between your palms into bite-sized balls
  8. Gently roll each ball in granulated sugar to coat the outside
  9. Press a single whole clove into the top of each truffle for a traditional finish

Observations

Beijinho is arguably one of the most beloved sweets in Brazil, taking center stage at birthday parties and family gatherings alike. These bite-sized treats combine the rich, silky texture of sweetened condensed milk with the delicate chew of coconut. This classic recipe stays true to the traditional homemade flavour that generations of families have grown up with, making them a perfect, foolproof addition to your next party spread.
