Ingredients
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 onion, finely chopped
1 bay leaf
1 cup rice
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups boiling water
1/2 onion, finely chopped
1 bay leaf
1 cup rice
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups boiling water
Where to find ingredients
You can find these ingredients at local neighborhood markets, open-air markets, or supermarkets. Long-grain parboiled rice is widely available, though any standard long-grain white rice works well.
Preparation method
- Finely dice the onion
- Heat the water until it reaches a boil
- Warm a medium pot over low heat
- Add the olive oil and the onion
- Add a pinch of salt
- Sauté the onion for 2 minutes until softened
- Incorporate the bay leaf into the mixture
- Add the rice and stir for 1 minute so the grains are coated in the olive oil
- Pour the boiling water over the rice
- Season with the remaining salt and stir gently
- Increase the heat to medium
- Do not stir the rice again from this point
- Wait until the water level reaches the surface of the grains
- Reduce the heat and partially cover the pot
- Cook until all the water has been absorbed
- Test the doneness by inserting a fork and pushing the grains aside at the bottom of the pot
- Leave on the heat for a few more moments if there is still moisture
- Turn off the heat and keep the pot covered for 5 minutes so the steam finishes the cooking
- Fluff the grains gently with a fork before serving
