Where to find ingredients
Buy beef, onions, tomatoes, apples, bananas and herbs from supermarkets, fresh produce markets or butcher counters. Curry powder, cinnamon, cloves, raisins, coconut, flour, margarine and stock cubes are usually in the grocery aisle. Alcatra or coxão mole are Brazilian cuts; ask the butcher for a tender stewing or frying beef cut as a substitute if those names are unavailable.
Preparation method
- In a large pot, heat the margarine and saute the chopped onion until translucent
- Add the cubed beef and brown it on all sides over medium-high heat
- Sprinkle the wheat flour over the beef and stir well, cooking for 1 minute
- Add the cloves, ground cinnamon and curry, mixing to coat the beef and spices
- Dissolve the beef stock cubes in the boiling water and pour into the pot
- Cover the pot and cook over low heat for about 40 minutes, or until the beef is tender
- Add the chopped tomatoes, apple cubes, chopped banana, grated coconut and white raisins
- Mix gently and cook for another 10 minutes, stirring occasionally
- Stir the plain yoghurt into the recipe, mixing well to make a creamy sauce
- Adjust the salt and black pepper if needed
- Remove from the heat and finish by scattering the chopped cheiro-verde over the top
- Serve the picadinho hot, with white rice
Observations
This picadinho brings the comfort of Brazilian cooking together with warm Indian-style spices. Curry and cinnamon are balanced with the sweetness of apple, banana and raisins, creating a creamy, aromatic sauce around tender beef.
It is a good choice when you want to change the family menu without making dinner complicated. Careful simmering keeps the flavours rounded, making it suitable for a shared lunch or a relaxed evening meal.
