Where to find ingredients
In Canada, beef, spices, yogurt, raisins, coconut and produce are available in grocery stores and butcher shops. Cheiro-verde can be made with parsley and green onions; Brazilian-style items may be found in Latin American or Brazilian markets.
Preparation method
- In a large pot, heat the margarine and sauté the chopped onion until translucent
- Add the cubed beef and brown on all sides over medium-high heat
- Sprinkle the all-purpose flour over the beef and stir well, cooking for 1 minute
- Add the cloves, ground cinnamon and curry powder, stirring to coat the beef and spices
- Dissolve the beef bouillon cubes in the boiling water and pour into the pot
- Cover the pot and cook over low heat for about 40 minutes, or until the beef is tender
- Add the chopped tomatoes, diced apple, chopped banana, grated coconut and golden raisins
- Mix gently and cook for another 10 minutes, stirring occasionally
- Stir the plain yogurt into the recipe, mixing well to make a creamy sauce
- Adjust the salt and black pepper, if needed
- Remove from the heat and finish by sprinkling the chopped cheiro-verde over top
- Serve the picadinho hot with white rice
