Traditional Beijinho (Beijinho)

Ingredients

2 cans of sweetened condensed milk
300 g of finely shredded fresh coconut
2 tablespoons of unsalted butter
Granulated sugar to taste, for coating
Whole cloves to taste, for garnish

Where to find ingredients

You can find sweetened condensed milk and granulated sugar in the baking aisle of any local supermarket. Freshly shredded coconut may be found in the produce section, though frozen shredded coconut is a common alternative. Whole cloves are available in the spices and seasonings section.

Preparation method

  1. Combine the sweetened condensed milk, butter, and fresh shredded coconut in a heavy-bottomed saucepan.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium-low heat.
  3. Cook, stirring constantly, for approximately 15 minutes until the mixture thickens and pulls away cleanly from the bottom of the pan.
  4. Remove the mixture from the heat and transfer it to a flat plate or shallow dish.
  5. Allow the mixture to cool until it reaches room temperature.
  6. Lightly grease your palms with a small amount of butter.
  7. Take small portions of the mixture and shape them into bite-sized balls.
  8. Roll each ball into the granulated sugar until evenly coated.
  9. Garnish each beijinho with a whole clove pressed into the center.
