Ingredients
1 tbsp olive oil
1/2 onion
1 bay leaf
1 whole clove
1 cup long-grain brown rice
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups boiling water
1/2 onion
1 bay leaf
1 whole clove
1 cup long-grain brown rice
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups boiling water
Where to find ingredients
You can find long-grain brown rice, fresh onions, and spices at local markets or supermarkets like Shoprite or Game. If you cannot find long-grain, parboiled brown rice is a common substitute, though the cooking time may vary slightly.
Preparation method
- Keep the half onion whole.
- Attach the bay leaf to the onion using the clove as a pin.
- Heat the pressure cooker over medium heat without the lid.
- Add the olive oil, the prepared onion assembly, and the rice.
- Season with salt.
- Sauté the grains for 1 minute so they are well-coated in the oil.
- Pour in the boiling water and stir well.
- Close the cooker and turn the heat up.
- Once the cooker reaches pressure and starts whistling, lower the heat.
- Maintain the cooking process for 15 minutes.
- Turn off the heat and allow the pressure to release naturally before opening the lid.
- Fluff the rice with a fork and serve immediately.
Observations
Using a pressure cooker drastically reduces the cooking time required for brown rice. This technique results in a perfect and flavorful side dish, keeping the cereal's properties intact in a practical way for daily meal preparation.
