Ingredients
1 1/2 cups rice
2 cups water
1 star anise
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups water
1 star anise
1 teaspoon salt
Where to find ingredients
You can find long-grain white rice, star anise, and fine salt at local markets or supermarkets like Shoprite or Quality Centre. If star anise is unavailable, cardamom pods make a suitable, albeit different, aromatic substitute.
Preparation method
- Place the rice, water, salt, and star anise inside a pressure cooker.
- Stir everything gently with a spoon.
- Seal the pressure cooker lid and place over high heat.
- Once the cooker begins to whistle or hiss indicating pressure, reduce the heat to low.
- Let it cook for 5 minutes.
- Turn off the heat and wait for the steam to release naturally until the noise stops completely.
- Open the cooker safely and remove the star anise.
- Transfer the rice to a bowl.
- Serve the dish while still hot.
Observations
This cooking method yields rice with a soft, slightly clumping texture. It is an excellent choice to pair with Asian-inspired dishes or any meal that calls for a distinct aromatic touch.
