Ingredients
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1/2 onion, finely diced
1 bay leaf
1 cup long-grain white rice
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups boiling water
1/2 onion, finely diced
1 bay leaf
1 cup long-grain white rice
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups boiling water
Where to find ingredients
You can find these staples at any local grocery store or neighbourhood supermarket. Use high-quality long-grain white rice for the best texture. If you prefer a more fragrant touch, you can substitute the olive oil with butter, though olive oil is the standard for this preparation.
Preparation method
- Dice the onion into very small cubes.
- Bring the water to a boil in a kettle or small pot.
- Place a medium saucepan over low heat.
- Add the olive oil and the diced onion to the pan.
- Add a small pinch of salt.
- Sauté the onion for 2 minutes until it becomes soft and translucent.
- Stir the bay leaf into the sautéed onion.
- Add the rice and stir for 1 minute to ensure the grains are well-coated with the oil.
- Pour the boiling water over the rice.
- Add the remaining salt and stir gently.
- Increase the heat to medium.
- Do not stir the rice again from this point onwards.
- Wait until the water level reaches the surface of the rice grains.
- Reduce the heat to low and cover the pan partially with the lid.
- Cook until you notice all the water has been absorbed.
- Test for doneness by inserting a fork and pushing the grains aside to check the bottom of the pan.
- Keep on the heat for a few more moments if any moisture remains.
- Turn off the heat and keep the pan covered for 5 minutes so the steam finishes the cooking process.
- Fluff the grains delicately with a fork before serving.
