Ingredients
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/2 onion
1 bay leaf
1 whole clove
1 cup long-grain brown rice
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups boiling water
1/2 onion
1 bay leaf
1 whole clove
1 cup long-grain brown rice
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups boiling water
Where to find ingredients
All ingredients are staples found in any local bazaar or supermarket across Pakistan. Long-grain brown rice can be sourced from larger grocery stores or organic health shops that stock whole grains. Ensure you use a good quality basmati-style or standard long-grain brown rice for the best results. Bay leaves (tej patta) and cloves (laung) are standard pantry essentials available at any local kiryana store or dry fruit shop.
Preparation method
- Keep the half onion intact
- Secure the bay leaf onto the onion using the whole clove
- Heat your pressure cooker over medium heat without the lid
- Add the oil, the prepared onion bundle, and the rice
- Season with salt
- Sauté the grains for 1 minute so they are well-coated with the oil
- Pour in the boiling water and stir well
- Seal the lid and turn up the flame
- Once the cooker reaches pressure and starts whistling, lower the heat
- Let it cook for 15 minutes
- Turn off the flame and allow the pressure to release naturally before opening the lid
- Fluff the rice gently with a fork and serve immediately
Observations
