Where to find ingredients
You can find sweetened condensed milk and desiccated or fresh coconut in the baking or imported goods aisle of major local supermarkets and grocery stores in Lilongwe or Blantyre. Unsalted butter is widely available in the dairy section. If fresh coconut is unavailable, a high-quality dry grated coconut is a suitable substitute.
Preparation method
- In a heavy-bottomed pan, combine the sweetened condensed milk, butter, and freshly grated coconut.
- Place the pan over low to medium heat.
- Cook, stirring constantly, for about 15 minutes, until the mixture thickens and pulls away from the bottom of the pan.
- Remove the mixture from the heat and transfer it to a plate or shallow dish.
- Allow the mixture to cool until it reaches room temperature.
- Lightly grease your palms with a bit of butter.
- Take small portions of the cooled mixture and roll them into smooth, bite-sized balls.
- Roll each ball into the crystal sugar until thoroughly coated.
- Finish by pressing a single whole clove into the center of each sweet.
