Where to find ingredients
Beef steaks: Available at any local butcher or supermarket meat counter. Crusty rolls: Look for fresh white rolls at local bakeries or the supermarket bread section—day-old rolls are perfect for soaking up the sauce. Tomato sauce: Found in the canned goods aisle at major supermarkets. Mozzarella cheese: Available in the dairy section; look for block mozzarella to grate yourself for better melting. Dried oregano and staples like garlic, onion, and salt are readily available in the spice and produce aisles of any local grocery shop.
Preparation method
- Season the steaks generously with salt and the minced garlic to your liking
- Heat a splash of oil in a frying pan and sear the steaks over high heat until nicely browned
- Arrange the seared steaks in a single layer in a baking dish
- Slice the bread rolls into rounds about 1 cm thick
- Place the bread slices directly over the steaks in the baking dish
- In a bowl, mix the tomato sauce with the chopped onion, seasoning with extra salt if needed
- Pour the tomato and onion sauce evenly over the steaks and bread slices
- Scatter the grated mozzarella cheese over the top of the dish
- Finish with a sprinkle of dried oregano to taste
- Pop it into a preheated oven at 180°C for about 10 minutes, or just until the cheese is melted and bubbling with a light golden hue
