Ingredients
1 can sweetened condensed milk (395 g)
Where to find ingredients
You can find sweetened condensed milk in the baking aisle or the canned goods section of any local grocery store or supermarket in Belize. It is a common pantry staple, typically found in standard 395g cans near the evaporated milk and shelf-stable dairy products.
Preparation method
- Remove the paper label from the can of sweetened condensed milk
- Using a small knife, scrape off any leftover glue residue to prevent it from clogging the pressure cooker valve
- Place the unopened can of sweetened condensed milk inside your pressure cooker
- Add enough water to the pot to fully cover the can, ensuring there is about two fingers' worth of water above it
- Seal the pressure cooker tightly and place it over medium heat
- Once the cooker reaches pressure and starts whistling or hissing, turn the heat down if needed and cook for 20 minutes
- Turn off the heat and let the steam release naturally. Do not force the pressure release valve
- Once all the pressure has fully dissipated, carefully open the lid
- Use kitchen tongs to remove the hot can from the pot, being careful to avoid burns
- Let the can cool down completely for at least 2 hours before attempting to open it
- For the best consistency and texture, make the dulce de leche the day before you plan to serve it
