Where to find ingredients
Beef, spices, yoghurt and fruit are available from supermarkets and neighbourhood groceries. Cheiro-verde is the Brazilian mix of parsley and spring onion; use those fresh herbs as the closest substitute while keeping the original mix in mind.
Preparation method
- In a large pot, heat the margarine and sauté the chopped onion until translucent
- Add the cubed beef and brown it on all sides over medium-high heat
- Sprinkle the plain flour over the beef and stir well, cooking for 1 minute
- Add the cloves, ground cinnamon and curry, mixing to coat the beef and spices
- Dissolve the beef stock cubes in the boiling water and pour it into the pot
- Cover the pot and cook over low heat for about 40 minutes, or until the beef is tender
- Add the chopped tomatoes, cubed apple, chopped banana, grated coconut and raisins
- Mix gently and cook for another 10 minutes, stirring now and then
- Fold the plain yoghurt into the recipe, stirring well to get a creamy sauce
- Adjust the salt and black pepper, if needed
- Remove from the heat and finish by sprinkling the chopped cheiro-verde over the top
- Serve the picadinho hot with white rice
Observations
This picadinho brings the comfort of Brazilian cooking together with Indian-inspired aromas. Curry, cinnamon and cloves meet apple, banana and coconut to make a creamy sauce with a warm, memorable flavour.
It is a versatile dish for changing up the weeknight menu without making the cooking complicated. Slow simmering keeps the beef tender and lets the sauce balance savoury spices with a touch of fruit sweetness, making it a good choice for family lunch or an easy dinner with friends.
