Ingredients
1/2 cup strong brewed coffee
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon baking powder
3 cups sugar
500 g raw peanuts in shell
1 tablespoon cocoa powder
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon baking powder
3 cups sugar
500 g raw peanuts in shell
1 tablespoon cocoa powder
Where to find ingredients
You can find raw peanuts in their shells at most larger supermarkets, often in the snacks or baking aisles. For good quality ground cinnamon and cocoa powder, check the baking or spice sections. Freshly brewed strong coffee is easily made at home. The sugar and baking powder are standard pantry items found in any supermarket. If you're looking for a more authentic Brazilian experience, specialty food stores or Latin American markets might stock specific brands or types of peanuts.
Preparation method
- In a saucepan, combine the sugar with the strong brewed coffee and heat over medium flame
- Stir constantly until the sugar dissolves and the syrup starts to thicken
- Add the raw peanuts in shell, cocoa powder, cinnamon, and baking powder to the saucepan
- Mix all ingredients well in the hot syrup until the mixture starts to dry out and pulls away from the bottom of the pan
- As soon as it reaches a dry consistency, remove the pan from the heat
- Pour the peanut mixture onto a greased baking tray
- Place in a preheated oven at a very low temperature (around 120°C or 250°F) for approximately 15 minutes
- During the time in the oven, stir the peanuts occasionally to prevent them from sticking to the tray and to ensure even drying
- Remove from the oven and let cool completely before serving or storing
