Ingredients
1 tbsp olive oil
1/2 finely chopped onion
1 bay leaf
1 cup rice
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups boiling water
1/2 finely chopped onion
1 bay leaf
1 cup rice
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups boiling water
Where to find ingredients
Find the ingredients in the rice aisle, the produce section, and the herbs/spices shelf of local supermarkets or neighbourhood grocery shops. Olive oil, bay leaf, and salt are usually widely available; if needed, use a neutral vegetable oil as a substitute for olive oil.
Preparation method
- Finely dice the onion
- Heat the water until it comes to a boil
- Heat a medium saucepan over low heat
- Add the olive oil and onion
- Add a pinch of salt
- Sauté the onion for 2 minutes until softened
- Stir the bay leaf into the sautéed onion
- Add the rice and stir for 1 minute so the grains are coated with the olive oil
- Pour the boiling water over the rice
- Season with the remaining salt and stir gently
- Increase the heat to medium
- Do not stir the rice from this point on
- Wait until the water reaches the level of the grains
- Lower the heat and partially cover the pan
- Cook until all the water has been absorbed
- Check the doneness by inserting a fork and separating the grains at the bottom of the pan
- Leave it on the heat for a few more moments if there is still any moisture
- Turn off the heat and keep the pan covered for 5 minutes so the steam can finish the cooking
- Gently fluff the grains with a fork before serving
