Sonho de Valsa Chocolate Layered Dessert

Ingredients

2 cans sweetened condensed milk
1 can table cream
500ml full-cream milk
2 eggs
4 tablespoons cocoa-based chocolate drink mix
4 tablespoons margarine
4 tablespoons white sugar
6 Sonho de Valsa bonbons, roughly chopped

Where to find ingredients

Most ingredients like condensed milk, table cream, and standard pantry staples are readily available at major supermarkets in Namibia. For the Sonho de Valsa bonbons, look in the international or 'imported sweets' section of larger shopping centres. If you cannot find this specific Brazilian brand, look for high-quality wafer-based chocolates filled with nut cream as a substitute, though using the original is best for the authentic flavour.

Preparation method

  1. To begin the first layer, whisk together 1 can of condensed milk with half the milk in a saucepan
  2. Stir in the egg yolks and 2 tablespoons of margarine
  3. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens into a rich cream
  4. Pour the cream into a glass serving dish
  5. Sprinkle 2 chopped bonbons over the layer and pop it into the freezer to set
  6. For the second layer, combine the second can of condensed milk with the remaining milk
  7. Mix in the remaining 2 tablespoons of margarine and the chocolate drink powder
  8. Cook over the heat, stirring until you have a creamy brigadeiro, being careful not to let it get too thick
  9. Spread the brigadeiro over the first, now-set layer in the dish
  10. Top this layer with 2 more chopped bonbons
  11. Return to the freezer for a short while to ensure the layers stay distinct
  12. For the final layer, whisk the egg whites until stiff peaks form
  13. Gently fold in the sugar and then the table cream
  14. Spread this fluffy topping over the chilled layers
  15. Finish by garnishing with the remaining 2 chopped bonbons
  16. Chill in the freezer until you are ready to serve

Observations

A decadent, triple-layered treat that’s ideal for special family gatherings. The secret lies in chilling each layer properly to ensure a clean, firm finish when you serve it.
