Extra virgin olive oil to taste
Sea salt to taste
Extra virgin olive oil to taste
Sea salt to taste
Where to find ingredients
You can find fresh bunches of spinach at local farmers' markets or the produce section of any neighborhood supermarket. Look for firm, bright green leaves. Olive oil and salt are pantry staples available at any local grocery store.
Preparation method
- Separate the leaves from the thicker stems
- Keep the thinner, tender stems attached to the leaves
- Place the spinach leaves into a large bowl
- Cover with water and wash thoroughly to remove any dirt
- Lift the spinach out of the bowl by hand rather than draining the water through a colander
- This ensures any leftover grit stays settled at the bottom of the bowl
- Place the washed spinach in a colander to drain off any excess water
- Fill a medium pot with water, about 1/3 of the way up
- Bring the water to a rolling boil over medium-high heat
- Place a steamer basket securely over the pot
- Check that the water is not touching the bottom of the steamer basket
- Add half of the spinach to the basket
- Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid
- Steam for about 5 minutes until the leaves have wilted
- Be careful not to overcook so the greens keep their color and structure
- You can also use a traditional bamboo steamer basket if you have one
- Use kitchen tongs to remove the steamed spinach and transfer it to a serving platter
- Repeat the process with the remaining batch of leaves
- Finish with a drizzle of olive oil and a pinch of salt
- Serve immediately while warm
Observations
This simple steaming method helps hold onto the natural nutrients and perfect texture, making it a light and healthy side dish for any meal of the week.
