1 bay leaf
1 cup white rice
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups boiling water
1/2 onion, finely diced
1 bay leaf
1 cup white rice
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups boiling water
Where to find ingredients
Find high-quality white rice and fresh produce like onions at local markets or neighborhood grocery stores. Use any long-grain white rice for the best results.
Preparation method
- Finely dice the onion into small cubes
- Bring the water to a boil in a kettle or pot
- Warm a medium-sized pot over low heat
- Pour in the olive oil and add the diced onion
- Add a pinch of salt to the onion
- Sauté the onion for 2 minutes until it softens
- Add the bay leaf to the sautéed mixture
- Stir in the rice and sauté for 1 minute until the grains are coated in the oil
- Pour the boiling water over the rice
- Add the remaining salt and give it a gentle stir
- Increase the heat to medium
- Do not stir the rice again from this point on
- Wait until the water level drops to meet the level of the grains
- Lower the heat and cover the pot partially with the lid
- Cook until all the water has been absorbed
- Check for doneness by inserting a fork to push aside grains at the bottom
- Leave it on the heat for a few more moments if there is still moisture left
- Turn off the heat and keep the pot covered for 5 minutes to let the steam finish the cooking
- Fluff the grains delicately with a fork before serving
Observations
This method produces a classic, versatile side dish that serves as the foundation for any meal, ensuring your grains remain separate and tender.
