Easy Homemade Creamy Coconut Candy

Ingredients

2 small grated coconuts or 1 large grated coconut
2 tins of condensed milk
1 tablespoon margarine
8 egg yolks
1/2 cup cow's milk

Where to find ingredients

Grated coconut can be found in most supermarkets, often in the baking or international foods aisle. Condensed milk and margarine are common staples available in all food shops. Eggs and cow's milk are readily available at local markets and supermarkets.

Preparation method

  1. In a saucepan, heat the condensed milk and margarine over low heat
  2. Stir continuously until the mixture starts to pull away from the bottom of the pan
  3. Add the grated coconut to the pan and mix well
  4. Remove the pan from the heat and let the mixture cool slightly
  5. In a separate bowl, dissolve the egg yolks in the milk
  6. Off the heat, gently stir the egg yolk and milk mixture into the sweet
  7. Grease a baking dish with margarine
  8. Pour the coconut candy mixture into the greased dish
  9. Bake in a preheated oven at low temperature for about 20 minutes
  10. Keep an eye on it to prevent the edges from burning during baking

Observations

Coconut candy, known as cocada, is a traditional sweet loved for its unique coconut flavour and texture, which can range from creamy to firm. Making it at home is a great way to enjoy this artisanal treat, perfect for dessert or with coffee. This recipe focuses on a creamy, easy-to-make version, ideal for beginners.

The preparation is relatively straightforward but requires attention to detail to achieve the perfect consistency. The main ingredients are coconut, condensed milk, and a touch of fat, which together create a rich and flavourful base. Baking it at the end enhances the flavours and gives this delicacy the desired texture.
