Sea salt to taste
Extra virgin olive oil to taste
Sea salt to taste
Where to find ingredients
Fresh spinach can be found in the produce section of local supermarkets like TM Pick n Pay or Choppies. Olive oil and sea salt are widely available in the dry goods aisle of any major grocer.
Preparation method
- Separate the leaves from the thicker stalks
- Keep the thinner, tender stalks attached to the leaves
- Place the spinach leaves into a large bowl
- Submerge in water and wash thoroughly to clean
- Lift the spinach out of the bowl with your hands rather than pouring out the water
- This method ensures any grit or dirt stays at the bottom of the bowl
- Leave the spinach in a colander to drain any excess moisture
- Fill a medium pot with water to about one-third of its capacity
- Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat
- Fit a steamer basket securely over the pot
- Make sure the boiling water does not touch the base of the steamer basket
- Place half of the spinach into the steamer
- Cover the pot with a lid
- Steam for approximately 5 minutes until the leaves have wilted
- Avoid overcooking the spinach so it does not become bitter or lose its structure
- Alternatively, you may use a bamboo steamer basket for this process
- Remove the spinach using tongs and transfer it to a serving dish
- Repeat the process with the remaining batch of leaves
- Finish by drizzling with olive oil and seasoning with salt
- Serve immediately while hot
Observations
This cooking method ensures that the leaves keep their essential nutrients and delicate texture, offering a light and nutritious side dish perfect for any day of the week.
