Ingredients
1 tbsp olive oil
1/2 onion, finely diced
1 bay leaf
1 cup long-grain white rice
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups boiling water
1/2 onion, finely diced
1 bay leaf
1 cup long-grain white rice
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups boiling water
Where to find ingredients
You can find these staples at local markets and grocery stores. For the best texture, ensure you are using long-grain white rice, which is widely available in the dry goods section.
Preparation method
- Dice the onion into very small, uniform pieces
- Bring the water to a rolling boil
- Warm a medium-sized saucepan over low heat
- Add the olive oil and diced onion
- Add a pinch of salt
- Sauté the onion for 2 minutes until softened
- Incorporate the bay leaf into the mixture
- Add the rice and stir for 1 minute so the grains are well-coated in the oil
- Pour the boiling water over the rice
- Season with the remaining salt and stir gently
- Increase the heat to medium
- Refrain from stirring the rice from this point on
- Wait until the water level reaches the top of the grains
- Lower the heat and cover the pan partially with a lid
- Cook until you notice all the water has been absorbed
- Test for doneness by inserting a fork and checking the bottom of the pan
- Keep on the heat for a few extra moments if there is still lingering moisture
- Turn off the heat and keep the pan covered for 5 minutes to let the steam finish the process
- Fluff the grains gently with a fork before serving
Observations
