Homestyle Indian-Spiced Picadinho with Fruit and Curry (Picadinho indiano)

Ingredients

1 medium onion, chopped
500 g beef, such as rump or topside, cut into small cubes
3 tablespoons margarine
3 tablespoons wheat flour
3 cloves
1 coffee spoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon curry powder
2 beef stock cubes
4 teacups boiling water
2 tomatoes, chopped, peeled and deseeded
1 apple, peeled and cut into small cubes
1 dwarf banana, chopped
1/2 teacup grated coconut
1/2 teacup white raisins
1/2 teacup plain yoghurt
1/2 teacup chopped cheiro-verde, parsley and spring onion

Where to find ingredients

In Sierra Leone, beef, onion, tomato, banana, coconut, raisins and spices can be found in markets and larger food shops. Plain yoghurt, margarine, stock cubes and curry powder are usually available in supermarkets or provisions shops. Cheiro-verde is best matched by using parsley with spring onion; keep it as a herb mix rather than changing the recipe.

Preparation method

  1. In a large pot, heat the margarine and sauté the chopped onion until it turns translucent
  2. Add the beef cubes and brown them on all sides over medium-high heat
  3. Sprinkle the wheat flour over the beef and stir well, cooking for 1 minute
  4. Add the cloves, ground cinnamon and curry powder, mixing to coat the beef and spices
  5. Dissolve the beef stock cubes in the boiling water and pour into the pot
  6. Cover the pot and cook over low heat for about 40 minutes, or until the beef is tender
  7. Add the chopped tomatoes, apple cubes, chopped banana, grated coconut and raisins
  8. Mix gently and cook for another 10 minutes, stirring occasionally
  9. Stir the plain yoghurt into the recipe, mixing well to make a creamy sauce
  10. Adjust the salt and black pepper if necessary
  11. Remove from the heat and finish by sprinkling the chopped cheiro-verde on top
  12. Serve the picadinho hot, with white rice

Observations

This picadinho brings the comfort of Brazilian cooking together with aromas associated with Indian-style spices. Curry and cinnamon are balanced with the sweetness of apple and banana, creating a creamy, inviting sauce. It is a flexible recipe that lifts an everyday meal and makes it feel special without becoming complicated.

It is well suited to anyone wanting to vary the menu with a tasty, comforting beef dish. Careful cooking keeps the flavours balanced, making it good for family lunch or supper with friends. It is a practical way to bring a more aromatic, travel-inspired touch to the table while keeping the Brazilian identity of the dish.
