Creamy Potato Gratin (Batata gratinada)

Ingredients

5 large potatoes
3/4 cup milk
1 box cream
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
3 tablespoons butter
100 g grated mozzarella cheese
oregano to taste
salt to taste

Where to find ingredients

Look for the potatoes, milk, flour, butter, oregano and salt at any supermarket in the fresh produce, dairy, baking and pantry aisles; buy grated mozzarella at the cheese counter or chilled dairy section.

Preparation method

  1. Peel the potatoes and cut them into medium-thickness rounds.
  2. Cook the potato slices in the microwave for about 7 minutes on high power, or cook them in boiling water on the hob until tender but still firm.
  3. Season the cooked potatoes with salt to taste during cooking, if you like.
  4. In a pan, melt the butter and add the oregano.
  5. In another bowl, mix the milk, cream and flour until smooth and well combined.
  6. Pour the milk mixture into the pan with the butter and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens slightly.
  7. Season the sauce with salt to taste, adjusting it if the potatoes have already been salted.
  8. In a medium baking dish, layer the potato rounds and the creamy sauce alternately.
  9. Drizzle each layer of potatoes with a little of the melted butter and oregano.
  10. Finish by covering the entire surface with the grated mozzarella cheese.
  11. Bake in a preheated 180°C oven for about 30 to 35 minutes, or until the cheese is golden and gratinated.
