Ingredients
500g all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon salt
2 tablespoons oil or melted lard
1 tablespoon white vinegar
200ml warm water
1 tablespoon salt
2 tablespoons oil or melted lard
1 tablespoon white vinegar
200ml warm water
Where to find ingredients
All-purpose flour, salt, oil, white vinegar, and water can be found in most grocery stores. Lard can be found in the meat or refrigerated section of larger supermarkets.
Preparation method
- In a large bowl, mix the all-purpose flour and salt
- Make a well in the center of the flour
- Add the oil or lard along with the vinegar
- Gradually pour in the warm water
- Incorporate the ingredients with your hands until the dough pulls away from your fingers
- Transfer the dough to a smooth surface
- Knead vigorously until it becomes soft and homogeneous
- If the dough seems too hard, add only a few drops of water
- If it feels sticky, sprinkle with a little more flour
- Cover the dough with a clean cloth
- Let it rest for 20 minutes
- Roll out the dough with a rolling pin until very thin
- Cut into desired sizes and shapes
- Distribute your preferred filling over the pieces
- Press the edges well to seal and prevent them from opening during frying
- Deep-fry in hot oil until golden brown
- Remove excess oil and serve immediately
Observations
If you want to make your pastels extra crispy and not oily, the key is to knead the dough well and roll it out very thin before frying. This ensures a perfect texture every time.
