Where to find ingredients
In the United States, sweetened condensed milk, sugar, water, and table cream can be found in grocery stores, usually in the baking aisle, canned milk section, or Latin foods aisle. Passion fruit concentrate and fresh passion fruit are often available at Latin markets, international grocery stores, or well-stocked supermarkets. Fresh passion fruit is ideal; frozen passion fruit pulp can be used as a substitute.
Preparation method
- In a blender, add the sweetened condensed milk, table cream, and passion fruit concentrate
- Blend until the mixture is smooth and creamy
- Transfer the mixture to a pretty serving dish or to individual cups
- Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until fully set
- If you want to speed it up, you can place it in the freezer for about 30 to 40 minutes
- While the mousse chills, prepare the syrup: in a saucepan, combine the sugar and water
- Cook over medium heat until the sugar dissolves and the syrup reaches a thread stage
- Add the passion fruit pulp to the syrup, stirring gently
- Cook for 1 or 2 more minutes, just to warm it through and blend the flavors
- Remove from the heat
- Once the mousse is firm, pour the passion fruit syrup over the top before serving
Observations
Passion fruit mousse is a classic dessert loved in Brazilian cooking, perfect for ending any meal with a refreshing touch. It is incredibly simple to prepare, ideal when you want something practical without giving up flavor. The sweetness of condensed milk and the bright acidity of passion fruit create a creamy texture and a balanced sweet-tart finish.
