1 bay leaf
1 cup white rice
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups boiling water
1/2 onion, finely chopped
1 bay leaf
1 cup white rice
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups boiling water
Where to find ingredients
Find these essentials at local markets in Honiara or general grocery shops; look for long-grain white rice in the pantry staples section, and fresh produce for onions.
Preparation method
- Finely dice the onion into small pieces.
- Bring the water to a rolling boil.
- Place a medium saucepan over low heat.
- Add the olive oil and the chopped onion to the pan.
- Add a pinch of salt to the onion.
- Sauté the onion for 2 minutes until it becomes translucent and soft.
- Stir in the bay leaf.
- Add the rice and stir for 1 minute, ensuring every grain is well coated with the oil.
- Pour the boiling water over the rice.
- Season with the remaining salt and give it a gentle stir.
- Increase the heat to medium.
- Avoid stirring the rice from this point on.
- Wait until the water level reaches the surface of the rice grains.
- Reduce the heat to low and cover the pan partially.
- Cook until all the water has been absorbed.
- Check for doneness by inserting a fork to push grains aside at the bottom of the pan.
- Keep on the heat for a few more moments if any moisture remains.
- Turn off the heat and keep the pan covered for 5 minutes, allowing the steam to finish the cooking process.
- Fluff the grains gently with a fork before serving.
