Brazilian Style Yakissoba (Yakissoba brasileiro)

Ingredients

1 package of number 8 spaghetti
500g of meat in strips (of your choice)
Salt to taste
1 bunch of Japanese broccoli
1 carrot, medium sliced
1 bell pepper, medium sliced
1 onion, medium sliced
1 vegetable bouillon cube
1/2 cup of water (for cooking vegetables)
Vegetable oil (optional, for searing meat)
500ml of ready-made yakissoba sauce
5 tablespoons of soy sauce (or Worcestershire sauce)
500ml of water (for the sauce)
1 tablespoon of sunflower oil (for the sauce)
2 tablespoons of cornstarch
1 beef bouillon cube
Champignon mushrooms to taste (optional)

Where to find ingredients

You can find all ingredients at local supermarkets or Asian specialty grocery stores. For the ready-made yakissoba sauce, look in the international aisle; a common substitute for the specific sauce is a blend of extra soy sauce, oyster sauce, and a touch of brown sugar.

Preparation method

  1. Cook the number 8 spaghetti in salted boiling water until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. Prepare the vegetables: cook the carrot, bell pepper, onion, and Japanese broccoli in a covered pan with 1/2 cup of water and the dissolved vegetable bouillon cube. Cook until they are soft, yet still crunchy.
  3. Season the meat strips with salt only.
  4. In a skillet or pan, heat a little vegetable oil (if using) and brown the meat strips.
  5. Add the browned meat to the cooked vegetables.
  6. Prepare the sauce: in another pan, mix the ready-made yakissoba sauce, soy sauce, sunflower oil, and the 500ml of water.
  7. Dissolve the cornstarch in a little cold water and add it to the sauce pan. Also add the beef bouillon cube.
  8. Place the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens.
  9. Add the thickened sauce to the pan with the meat and vegetables. Mix well and let it simmer for a few minutes, stirring occasionally.
  10. If desired, add sliced champignons.
  11. Serve the sauce with the meat and vegetables over the cooked pasta.
