Brazilian Stir-fried Noodles (Yakissoba brasileiro)

Ingredients

1 package of spaghetti pasta (nº 8)
500 g of beef strips of your choice
Salt to taste
1 bunch of Japanese broccoli
1 carrot, medium sliced
1 bell pepper, medium sliced
1 onion, medium sliced
1 vegetable bouillon cube
1/2 cup of water (for cooking vegetables)
Vegetable oil (optional, for searing meat)
500 ml of prepared yakissoba sauce
5 tablespoons of soy sauce (or Worcestershire sauce)
500 ml of water (for the sauce)
1 tablespoon of sunflower oil (for the sauce)
2 tablespoons of cornstarch
1 beef bouillon cube
Champignon mushrooms to taste (optional)

Where to find ingredients

Find fresh produce and meat at local markets or grocery stores. Spaghetti and soy sauce are available in the pasta and international aisles. Japanese broccoli can be found in specialized produce departments; as a substitute, regular broccoli may be used. Worcestershire sauce is a common substitute for soy sauce depending on local preference.

Preparation method

  1. Cook the spaghetti in boiling salted water until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. Prepare the vegetables: steam the carrots, bell pepper, onion, and Japanese broccoli in a covered pan with 1/2 cup of water and the dissolved vegetable bouillon cube until tender yet crisp.
  3. Season the beef strips with salt to taste.
  4. In a skillet or pan, heat the vegetable oil (if using) and brown the beef strips.
  5. Add the browned meat to the pan with the cooked vegetables.
  6. Prepare the sauce: in another pan, combine the prepared yakissoba sauce, soy sauce, sunflower oil, and the 500 ml of water.
  7. Dissolve the cornstarch in a little cold water and add it to the sauce pan, then add the beef bouillon cube.
  8. Bring the mixture to medium heat, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens.
  9. Add the thickened sauce to the pan with the meat and vegetables. Mix well and simmer for a few minutes, stirring occasionally.
  10. If desired, fold in the sliced champignons.
  11. Serve the meat, vegetable, and sauce mixture over the cooked spaghetti.
