Easy Homemade Potato Gnocchi (Nhoque de batata)

Ingredients

6 medium potatoes
1 cup plain flour
Salt to taste
500g minced beef
1/2 onion, finely chopped
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 beef stock cubes
1 tin tomato sauce
Grated cheese to taste

Where to find ingredients

You can find potatoes, onions, and basic larder ingredients at any large supermarket like Tesco, Sainsbury's, or Waitrose. Look for 'plain flour' in the baking aisle and 'beef stock cubes' in the seasoning section. For the cheese, a matured cheddar or a hard Italian-style hard cheese works well as a topping.

Preparation method

  1. Boil the potatoes in water until they are tender.
  2. Peel the potatoes and pass them through a potato ricer while they are still hot.
  3. Gradually add the flour and salt to the potatoes, kneading well until a smooth dough is formed.
  4. Place the dough onto a floured surface and roll it into long, thin ropes.
  5. Cut each rope into pieces approximately 2 cm in length.
  6. Bring a large pot of salted water to the boil.
  7. Once the water is boiling, add the gnocchi in small batches; they are cooked when they rise to the surface.
  8. Prepare a bowl of cold water and a colander. Remove the cooked gnocchi with a slotted spoon and place them in the colander to cool quickly.
  9. Repeat the process until all the dough is cooked.
  10. Drain the gnocchi well and set aside in an ovenproof dish.
  11. Finely dice the onion and sauté in a pan with the olive oil.
  12. Add the minced beef and the beef stock cubes to the pan.
  13. Stir well and, once the beef is cooked through, pour in the tomato sauce.
  14. Allow the sauce to simmer for another 4 minutes.
  15. Pour the meat sauce over the prepared gnocchi.
  16. Sprinkle with grated cheese.
  17. Place in the oven to gratinate until golden.
  18. Serve hot.
