Steamed Spinach

Ingredients

1 large bunch of spinach
Extra virgin olive oil to taste
Salt to taste

Where to find ingredients

Fresh spinach bunches can be found in the produce section of most grocery stores, farmers' markets, or greengrocers. Olive oil and salt are pantry staples available in any supermarket.

Preparation

  1. Separate the leaves from the thicker stalks
  2. Keep the thinner stalks attached to the leaves
  3. Place the leaves in a bowl
  4. Cover with water and wash thoroughly
  5. Remove the spinach from the bowl by hand instead of draining the water
  6. This ensures that any dirt residue remains at the bottom of the container
  7. Leave the spinach in a colander to drain off excess liquid
  8. Fill a medium pot with water until it is about 1/3 full
  9. Heat over the stove until it reaches a boil
  10. Place a steam basket over the pot
  11. Ensure that the water does not come into direct contact with the basket
  12. Arrange half of the spinach in the basket
  13. Cover the pot with a lid
  14. Steam for approximately 5 minutes until the leaves have wilted
  15. Avoid prolonged cooking times to prevent the vegetable from becoming bitter or losing its structure
  16. Alternatively, you can use a bamboo steamer basket
  17. Remove the spinach using kitchen tongs and transfer to a serving dish
  18. Repeat the process with the remaining half of the leaves
  19. Finish by seasoning with olive oil and salt
  20. Serve immediately

Notes

This cooking method preserves the nutrients and texture of the leaves, resulting in a light and healthy accompaniment for everyday meals.
