Where to find ingredients
You can find fresh potatoes, onions, and minced beef at local wet markets or supermarket produce and butcher sections. All-purpose flour, tomato sauce in tins, and stock cubes are readily available in the baking and pantry aisles of major grocery stores.
Preparation method
- Boil the potatoes in water until they are tender.
- Peel the potatoes and pass them through a potato ricer while still hot.
- Gradually add the flour and salt to the potatoes, kneading well until you achieve a smooth, consistent dough.
- Place the dough onto a floured surface and roll it into long, thin logs.
- Cut each log into small pieces approximately 2 cm in length.
- In a large pot, bring a generous amount of salted water to a boil.
- Once the water is boiling, add the gnocchi in small batches, waiting for them to rise to the surface.
- Prepare a bowl of cold water and a colander. Remove the cooked gnocchi with a slotted spoon and transfer them to the colander to stop the cooking process with a quick cold rinse.
- Repeat the process until all the dough has been cooked.
- Drain the gnocchi well and set them aside in a baking dish.
- Finely chop the onion and sauté it in a pan with the olive oil.
- Add the minced beef and the beef stock cubes to the pan.
- Stir well, and once the meat is browned, pour in the tomato sauce.
- Allow the sauce to simmer for another 4 minutes.
- Pour the meat sauce over the prepared gnocchi.
- Sprinkle the grated cheese over the top.
- Place in the oven to brown the cheese slightly.
- Serve while hot.
