Brazilian Yakissoba (Yakissoba brasileiro)

Ingredients

1 package of number 8 spaghetti noodles
500 g of beef strips (of your choice)
Salt to taste
1 bunch of Japanese broccoli
1 carrot, medium-sliced
1 bell pepper, medium-sliced
1 onion, medium-sliced
1 vegetable bouillon cube
1/2 cup of water (to cook the vegetables)
Vegetable oil (optional, for searing the meat)
500 ml of ready-made yakissoba sauce
5 tablespoons of shoyu (soy) sauce (or Worcestershire sauce)
500 ml of water (for the sauce)
1 tablespoon of sunflower oil (for the sauce)
2 tablespoons of cornstarch
1 beef bouillon cube
Mushrooms to taste (optional)

Where to find ingredients

You can find all ingredients at local supermarkets or municipal markets. Soy sauce is widely available in the international aisles of local grocery stores. If you cannot find Japanese broccoli, regular broccoli florets are a suitable substitute.

Preparation method

  1. Cook the number 8 spaghetti in boiling salted water until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. Prepare the vegetables: cook the carrots, bell pepper, onion, and Japanese broccoli in a covered pot with 1/2 cup of water and the dissolved vegetable bouillon cube. Cook until tender but still crisp.
  3. Season the beef strips with salt only.
  4. In a skillet or pan, heat a little vegetable oil (if using) and sear the beef strips until browned.
  5. Add the browned beef to the pot with the cooked vegetables.
  6. Prepare the sauce: in another pot, mix the ready-made yakissoba sauce, shoyu sauce, sunflower oil, and 500 ml of water.
  7. Dissolve the cornstarch in a little cold water and add it to the sauce pot. Also, add the beef bouillon cube.
  8. Bring the mixture to medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens.
  9. Add the thickened sauce to the pot with the meat and vegetables. Mix well and let it simmer for a few minutes, stirring occasionally.
  10. If desired, add sliced mushrooms.
  11. Serve the sauce with the meat and vegetables over the cooked noodles.
