Ingredients
2 cans condensed milk
300g unsalted butter
2 cups finely grated fresh coconut
Crystal sugar for rolling
Whole cloves for decoration
300g unsalted butter
2 cups finely grated fresh coconut
Crystal sugar for rolling
Whole cloves for decoration
Where to find ingredients
Condensed milk and unsalted butter are widely available in the dairy or baking aisle of most supermarkets. Fresh coconut can sometimes be found whole in the produce section of larger supermarkets or at Latin American or Asian markets; however, it's often more convenient to use pre-shredded or desiccated coconut. If fresh is unavailable, unsweetened, finely shredded coconut (not the large flakes) is a good substitute, though the texture will differ slightly. Crystal sugar is available in the baking aisle; coarse sugar or granulated sugar can be used as alternatives for rolling. Whole cloves are typically found in the spice aisle of any grocery store.
Preparation method
- In a saucepan, combine the condensed milk, butter, and grated fresh coconut
- Bring the saucepan to low to medium heat
- Cook, stirring constantly, for about 15 minutes, until the mixture pulls away from the bottom of the pan, forming a thick cream
- Remove the mixture from the heat and transfer to a plate or serving dish
- Let it cool until lukewarm
- Grease your hands with a little butter
- Take small portions of the mixture and roll them into balls
- Roll the shaped Beijinhos in crystal sugar
- Decorate each Beijinho with a whole clove
