Pastel Dough

Ingredients

500g all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon salt
2 tablespoons oil or melted lard
1 tablespoon white vinegar
200ml warm water

Where to find ingredients

Flour, salt, oil, vinegar, and water can be found at most grocery stores. Lard is available at butcher shops or some grocery stores.

Preparation method

  1. Mix the flour and salt in a large bowl
  2. Make a well in the center of the flour
  3. Add the oil or lard along with the vinegar
  4. Gradually pour in the warm water
  5. Incorporate the ingredients with your hands until the dough pulls away from your fingers
  6. Transfer the dough to a smooth surface
  7. Knead vigorously until it is smooth and homogeneous
  8. If the dough seems too hard, add only a few drops of water
  9. If you notice it's sticking, sprinkle a little more flour
  10. Cover the dough with a clean cloth
  11. Let it rest for 20 minutes
  12. Roll out the dough until very thin
  13. Cut into desired sizes and shapes
  14. Distribute your preferred filling over the pieces
  15. Press the edges firmly to seal and prevent them from opening during frying
  16. Deep-fry in hot oil until golden brown
  17. Remove excess oil and serve immediately

Observations

If you want to make your pastels extra crispy and not greasy, the tip is to knead the dough well and roll it out very thin before frying.
